You've Come a Long Way Baby - Happy Birthday:)

Yesterday night, Kathryn Bigelow won the Oscar for best Director for the excellent movie "The Hurt Locker". It was the first time ever a woman won that great distinction in this category. I cheered for her as I was watching her accepting the award in front of James Cameron, amazing Director himself and... her ex! Congratulations Kathryn Bigelow! What a great way to start celebrating Women's Day!

Did you know the first International Women's Day (IWD) was observed on February 28th, 1909 in the United States? It followed a declaration by the Socialist Party of America.

Now, IWD is marked on March 8th every year. It is a major day of global celebration for the economic, political and social achievements of women. In some celebrations, the day lost its political flavour and became simply an occasion for men to express their love to the women around them. In others, however, the political and human rights theme runs strong, and political and social awareness of the struggles of women worldwide are brought out and examined in a hopeful manner.

On occasion of 2010 International Women's Day the Inernational Committee of the Red Cross is drawing attention to the hardship displaced women endure (sexual violence, discrimination and intimidation). The displacement of populations is one of the gravest consequences of today's armed conflicts. It affects women in a host of ways. Often living alone with their children, many women face poverty and social exclusion as well.

But far from being helpless victims, women are resourceful, resilient and courageous in the face of hardship. And they really can be whatever they choose to be. Be whatever you want to be. Let's stay strong and bonded. Tell the women around you how beautiful they are today. And say it to the amazing lady standing in front of you in the miror as well:)

Take care - You look beautiful!
